Blooming Blackberries

Blackberry Blossoms 2016Our bees are busy in the blackberry rows.  The blackberries are in full bloom right now, and are beautiful (photo at right).  Hopefully we will have a great crop of blackberries like last year.  Our blueberries have finished blooming and have set fruit already.  You may not recall, but last year, our blueberry crop was very sparse due to something called Mummy Berry.  This spore causes the fruit to dry up and fall off the bush.  It apparently continues to be a problem year after year by overwintering in the ground around the bush and re-emerging in Spring. The suggested remedy is to spray, spray, spray… but we’re organic!…  After much research on what to do, we finally found some organic farms in the Northwest that had success with extremely heavy mulching in February.  Why February?  The theory is that by mulching overly heavy it creates a barrier and will keep last years spores from surfacing while the plant is blooming.  This is supposed to keep the spores from effecting this years crop. Blueberries bloom rather early in March, so February for mulching was exactly right.  So far, things are looking good.  I took a photo so you could see all the berries! (below, left)

Mother Nature hasn’t wasted any time bringing Spring to Georgia this year.  Lots of Springtime things have been happening, including honey bee swarms.  Bees, or rather, bee hives swarm to establish new hives.  What happens is that the hive creates a new queen, and the older queen along with many, many more leave to create a new colony somewhere.  Most of the swarms that we see here on the farm are from our own hives.  If we catch the swarm, then we have another colony with a queen.  If we don’t catch it, then we’ve just lost a whole bunch of bees.

Blueberries 2016Spring Rain

RoofWith all this Spring rain, the roof on the barn decided it had enough and began to leak.  We certainly didn’t think we would have to deal with a roof right now, and who has time?  The weather forecast says we should have several dry days in a row, four and a half days exactly, so here we are tearing off the old roof.  The brown and silver tarps are supposed to catch all the old shingles and nails.  It mostly worked… luckily, we have a huge magnet that’s great to find stray nails.

Blackberry Cobbler

Sometimes you just need to make Blackberry Cobbler.  If someone you love requests a cobbler, that makes it even better.  The anticipation in the household of eating it is wonderful. The best cobbler begins early in the morning with picking the blackberries and hopefully there are helpers tagging along.  This is an important step because the love that goes into the dessert cannot be denied when you (and your helpers) have taken the time to hand-pick the berries!  Then, once back in the kitchen, everyone usually marvels at how many berries you picked.  The transformation process begins when the person in charge of the kitchen starts giving directions.  Turning blackberries into cobbler is an art form.  No two are ever identical.  Berries are different and if you are like me, you mix it until it “looks right”, which can be challenging to explain.   Different tastes appreciate different types of this dessert and there are several ways to achieve a great cobbler.  Some have a pie crust on top or in a lattice pattern or even mixed in.  Some have a biscuit type dough that is dolloped on top of the berries and baked in.  Some have batter on the bottom and berries on top, which eventually mix and bake together.  No matter what type you prefer, it’s usually delicious… and if not, then a little ice cream usually fixes any shortcomings.  Here is the recipe that I use, but I usually double it:

3 cups fresh blackberries
3 tablespoons white sugar
1/3 cup orange juice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
…set this aside for now.
In a bowl, combine:
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
In another bowl, mix together:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Then mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.  Drop this batter by rounded tablespoons on top of the berries that are already in your baking dish.  Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.  (I usually double this recipe.)  This is adapted from a blueberry cobbler recipe on allrecipes.com.

JulyPickJulyPick2Blackberry season is closed, but these wonderfully smart folks were able to squeeze in and pick berries before they were gone.  One person told us of a friend who just returned from Afghanistan.  This friend mentioned that during their deployment, they kept thinking about blackberry cobbler.  Of course she had to make him one and include the extra effort by hand picking the berries.  Love was definitely one of the ingredients in that cobbler!  What a great welcome home gift.

Blackberry Season’s Big Finish

coupleBySignWe have two full rows of Navaho Blackberries which are still producing and giving us our big finish, but this is the last week we will be open.  If you want blackberries, you should come early in the morning on Tuesday July 7th or on Friday July 10th.  Hours are being reduced to mornings only this week.  Time is limited and you’ve also got wildlife to compete with (see below).

There are so many interesting blackberry enthusiasts that have visited us this season.  This past week has been no different.  This happy couple came from Columbus and if you want to see what 2 and a half quarts of berries looks like, that is what they are holding.  We supply a bucket with a liner and you simply lift out the liner and carry your berries home in it, with a twist tie, of course.  We also have a 1 quart size bucket with liner and a 1 pint size.  Remember, July 7th and July 10th are the end of our open berry season, so get them while you can.  See sidebar for more details.

What happens now?

As each row finishes bearing, the “floricanes”, which are the stems that are producing fruit this year, begin to wither and droop.  These stems do not produce again next year and they need to be pruned out.  It’s easiest to do this right after the fruiting season because you can easily tell them apart from the new growth.  This process lets the plants energy go into the “primocanes”, which are the stems that will produce next years berries.  Since we have different varieties of berries, they have slightly different timelines in which they bloom, bear fruit, and wither so that lets the work of pruning be spaced out too.  Even though the blackberries have a big finish, more work is just beginning.  Here is a small video of Doug explaining the thornless blackberry pruning process.
