This Friday, there is no morning pick in preparation for the evening Pick & PLAY music event, which is from 4 PM – 7 PM.  We are very excited about this and will have lots of berries available for you.  We provide buckets with liners for picking but you may want to bring a blanket to sit on if you want to listen to the music for a while. If it rains, the music may not happen, but the berries will be ready!

Our farm has had some wonderfully written press lately with great pictures too.  Both the LaGrange Daily News and The Valley Times News have excellent reporters.  Here is a link to  the LaGrange Daily News article titled “Farmer Has Big Plans”   The Valley Times News also has a direct link to their article entitled, “Pick Your Own Fresh Berries Offered at RabbitEye Farm.” The Valley Times News reprinted the directions the following day, so just use the directions and map that we provide on the website HERE.

Blackberry SmileThis warm weather is plumping up the berries nicely.  The Blackberries are ripe when they practically fall off the vine into your hand.  It’s a funny thought that Blackberries are still “green” when they are red.  Even though they look good red, they have to be entirely black if you want to eat them plain.  Some have said that they purposely pick some red ones if they are making jelly as the red Blackberries help it to jell.  Apparently, that is how they used to make jelly back before you could buy pectin.  I didn’t know that.

At RabbitEye Farm, the Blackberries are still the most abundant, then Red Raspberries, which we are still surprised about.  The Blueberries haven’t grown up quite enough yet this year.  There is still one more variety to ripen called “Ochlockonee”, but that hasn’t happened yet. I’ll let you know.

The next big thing for us is our Pick & PLAY music event this Friday June, 19th and again on June 26th, 2015.  Live music in the berry patch!  Listen while you pick berries or just sit and listen or bring an instrument and join in.  4PM – 7 PM.  We can’t control the weather, but if it rains, come on out anyway, there will be berries to pick.  Maybe you can get blackberry juice on your chin too.

Happy Berry Picking

Happy CcustomersBerry picking was good Tuesday morning in beautiful weather.  A quick rain shower happened in the early afternoon, and then we had another beautiful evening.  We enjoyed meeting lots of great people, most of whom just happened to hear about us by accident.  Here are a few pictures from our very first pick day… ever!  The blackberries were plentiful and everyone got what they came for, huge juicy berries.  A few also found enough red raspberries to pick, which really surprised us!  This was a great start to the berry picking season, and these folks could see the loads more berries just waiting to mature.  We are going to be overrun with Blackberry goodness.  Yesterday I saw that the Blueberries were also ripening up.  Three types of berries are all ripening at the same time, Blackberries, Raspberries and Blueberries.  The Blackberries are the most abundant, then Blueberries, and then Raspberries.  We will probably expand our hours next week and will post them here on the website after Friday’s event.

Thumbs upPick & PLAY event

Each Friday in June from 4 – 7 PM, we will have live acoustic music in the berry patch.  How cool is that?  You can pick berries and enjoy beautiful music at the same time.  Live music outdoors is a special experience and so is picking the freshest berries you can get… right off the vine.  It’s a great relaxing summer experience.  We hope to see you and want you to feel like it deserves a thumbs-up like this beautiful berry picker!

We’ve made it easy…

We provide 3 sizes of buckets to pick into that have a liner.  You keep this liner to take your berries home.  It’s best to handle the berries as little as possible and this lets you transport your berries in the most gentle fashion. The sizes are: a generous pint, quart, and 2½ quart pails.  Prices are $3.75,  $7.00,  and $15.00.  We will also have berries “by the cup” for donations.  These proceeds all go toward the start up of Grayhill School Farm, a research and education farm dedicated to sustainable agriculture in our local area.  More about this soon.
Open Friday June 12th from 7 – 11 AM and then again from 4 – 7 PM with our Pick and PLAY music event.

Cotton Candy Strawberries

Bowl of StrawberriesHeirloom StrawberryDid you know that an Heirloom Strawberry patch on a 90 degree day smells like cotton candy?  What a treat… here are a few pictures.  The berries are especially sweet if you time it right and pick and eat when the berry is totally ripe.  A lesson in patience for sure!  If you can, wait until that last bit of white has just turned red, then it’s perfect for picking.  Regular strawberries that you find in a grocery store are pointy on the end, and that pointy tip is usually what ripens last.  Heirloom berries are more rounded, so you have to look at the side that is hidden from the sun before you pick it, because that is what ripens last.  Not all strawberry plants within the same variety are equal.  In my berry patch, the most productive plants are the ones that I propagated last year.  This is their first year producing fruit and their fruit is larger than the berries produced by last years plants. That propagation experiment was a lot of work, but the results are delicious.  **Amaze your family and friends with the recipe below!

Strawberry Ice CreamEasy Three Minute Strawberry Ice Cream!…

There are way more things to make with strawberries than the usual jams and jellies.  This one is unbelievable.  Here is a recipe that is a really fast way to make strawberry ice cream.  You make it with FROZEN strawberries, so you could always have this ready to go.  There are only 2 other ingredients and those are sugar and heavy cream.  I got this from allrecipes.comEven though the recipe says you can use a blender, I don’t recommend it unless your strawberries are slightly thawed.  Use a food processor and have everything ready because this processes really fast.  Make a single recipe first, and if your food processor can handle it, then double the recipe.

Ingredients:
10 ounces frozen strawberries, which is about 2 or 2.5 cups.

1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar (this depends on the sweetness of your strawberries)

Directions:   Put strawberries and sugar into a food processor and roughly chop – do not over process this step, then with the processor running, slowly pour in the heavy cream until fluffy.  Serve immediately or scoop into a bowl and freeze.  The leafy sprig in the photo is mint.  It adds a fancy touch but is not required.  Here is another hint – freeze your freshly cleaned strawberries spread out on a cookie sheet first and then put them into a ziplock bag.  That way they freeze individually and you will be able to measure out what you need and put the rest back in the freezer.   Enjoy!
